Service
Music at Messiah is a central part of our worship – it is an important way we communicate with God and celebrate our connection to each other. Throughout the liturgical year, music enhances our worship experience and helps us to open our hearts and minds to God. As Christians living in the 21st century world, music grounds us spiritually and helps us to reflect upon our human condition in light of our faith experience. Our music program offers opportunities for all to participate; whether you are a seasoned professional or passionate amateur, sing in English, Spanish, or both, you will find opportunities to lend your voice to our music ministry. Children will find a voice in Messiah’s Chorister program and adults will find opportunities to sing at the10:15 am or noon services. If listening is how you prefer to experience God through music, you will enjoy the diverse musical styles presented at special services such as Evensong and Compline or at our Music at Messiah concert series.

To find out more about how you can become involved in musical opportunities at Messiah during the regular program year or during summer, contact David Sheridan, Director of Music and Liturgy at music@messiah-santaana.org.
Music at the 10:15 Service Music at the 10:15 Service: This service of the Holy Eucharist features traditional hymns, choral anthems, and service music from the Anglican liturgical tradition and a blended selection of world music and other favorites. Hymns are selected largely from the Hymnal 1982, Lift Every Voice and Sing 2, and Wonder, Love and Praise. During special services, guest instrumentalists accompany the choir on percussion, brass or strings. Several times a year the choir is joined also by the Messiah Choristers, our children’s and youth choir.
Music at the Noon Service Music at the Noon Service: The noon service is enriched by the musical leadership of Nuevo Amanecer, led by Miguel Conniff. The service features both contemporary and traditional Spanish-language music and congregational singing. The choir is accompanied by guitar, keyboard and, for special occasions, guest musicians. Nuevo Amanecer combines with the English choir for bilingual services, and is joined by Messiah’s Choristers for special services.
Messiah Choristers (RSCMA) Messiah Choristers (RSCMA): Open to children and youth ages 5-17. This is Messiah’s children’s choir made up of children who attend both the 10:15 and Noon services. These children and youth are trained in singing techniques and music theory using the RSCMA (Royal School of Church Music, America) curriculum.

The choir sings traditional Anglican and world music and pieces from the classical musical tradition. Their repertoire includes songs in English, Spanish, French and Latin. The older choristers regularly attend the summer RSCMA training course in Newport, RI.

FRIENDS OF MUSIC

Friends of Music adds to the beauty of holiness at Messiah through its support for our Music at Messiah series and staff singers. Friends of Music helps buy new music and subsidizes the cost of adding professional musicians to our programs and services. A major component of our Friends of Music program remains the wonderful receptions and dinners that accompany our events. Throughout the year, Friends of Music sponsors concerts by area, national and international musicians. Their donations also make possible performances by guest musicians in regular church services and our yearly Evensong and champagne reception. These concerts are held in the beautiful setting of our historic church and are open to the entire community. Performers from OCSA’s Musical Theatre and Classical Voice and other conservatories also use our church for recitals throughout the year.
